Honor a Legend Wilkes Bashford may have been born in Yonkers (nobody was quite sure), grew up in the foothills of the Berkshires, and worked at a department store in Cincinnati. Then, like a lot of sensible people, he made his way to San Francisco, where in 1966 he opened his own store, selling clothes Jay Gatsby would love, just as everybody was going for dashikis. Wilkes went his own way, and became a legend who dressed legends, including, of course, Wille Brown. He died at 82, in the city he loved. His name lives on, in stores in the City and Palo Alto, owned by the family-owned Mitchells stores of Connecticut. Pay your respects (375 Sutter St, San Francisco; Stanford Shopping Center, Palo Alto).
